Can't beat Catwoman.
My cousin Anne taught me how to make these awhile back and I love them - fun to make when the weather is nice and you don't have to worry about the Anthropology test that's been killing you for the past two weeks (or so). I'll be making several of these (and with different, Catwoman oriented covers) to put on my Etsy (which is still in the making).

(sooc)

Last weekend I had a wonderful time helping out my dear old bestest friend Lauren babysit her most adorable cousins. (She has a way with babies like you wouldn't believe). Anywho! The older boys have grown to be able to verbalize objection to having their pictures taken, so my camera was predominantly focused on little Miles. Too precious.

Side note: Kerry and Charles' home is meant for an HGTV magazine spread, it's unbelievably beautiful and cozy.

As for now, I am in desperate need of sleep, for an Anthropology test awaits me in the morning. Fun fun fun.

The Petrobelli Altarpiece

My delicious new sketchbook.

Over the weekend I was fortunate enough to see The Petrobelli Altarpiece at the Blanton Museum.

I've always had an intrinsic love and fascination for museums. They're peaceful and beautiful, and I love seeing history right before my eyes. I get all giddy just thinking about it, really. Whenever I'm feeling blue, I go to a museum (whether it be art, history, any kind, I'm not biased to any one sort). They instantly calm me, put me at ease. Perhaps it's the serene quietness that gives my mind room to wander, or because it satiates my never ending love of learning new things. That or the lighting, I don't know, I just love them.

So I was basically a kid in a visually captivating, High Renaissance candy store the other day.

Sorry for the very lame photo that I took with my iPhone, by the way. It clearly doesn't give the altarpiece justice.

If you don't know about the altarpiece, please don't mind if I give you a brief bio that explains the ambiguous gray panels depriving us the whole of the piece, because the history behind it fascinates me.

History Lesson Time! Basically, two Petrobelli cousins, Antonio and Girolamo, commissioned a 35 year old chap in the form of Paolo Veronese (well, really Paolo Caliari but called Paolo Veronese) to paint them a loverly altarpiece for the family chapel in the Church of San Francesco.

So the altar was created (around 1563) and placed above the altar in the church. Until, however, the Venetian government had to go and suppress the church, which was completely destroyed in 1769. The painting landed in the hands of an art dealer named Pietro Concollo, who cut it up and sold it because (a: he wanted to make a profit and b: figured it was just too big to sell in one piece). Yes, as much as I was thinking "What the eff, Pietro?" apparently this wasn't an uncommon deal back in the day.

HENCE the gray panels, the piece is cut up! Even these pieces haven't been reunited for a good two centuries, which is pretty much spectacular to an art history buff like me. And now, where paint should be, is replaced with gray panels.

So I can't help but wonder if I would love this altarpiece so much if it wasn't so ambiguous and denied me the pleasure of seeing all of it. I have to admit, this definitely makes it more endearing, captivating.

Anywho! That is my soapbox on The Petrobelli Altarpiece.

More wonderful history here.

Q&A

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I'm in a survey kind of a mood.

What are your favorite bands/singers?
Tough question. Although many interests come and go, I'll always put Tom Petty at the top of my list. His music calms me down but makes me feel like dancing all at the same time, it's pretty wonderful really. I'm also in love with Iron & Wine and City and Colour oh so much. Lately I've been listening to a fair share of Matt Costa, Jose Gonzales, and Fleet Foxes as well. Sorry that there's nothing obscure or underground or whatever to fill you in musically, but I like what I like.

What are three things you can't live without?
Only three? Oy.
1. Laptop. It's sad how dependent I am on it, really.
2. Journals. I have them everywhere and in many forms (moleskine, sketchbook, blog). It's ridiculous, really.
3. My camera, Gertie. I love her.

What's been your latest purchase?
My favorite new gadget, the milk frother! I am, quite literally, obsessed with it. I get antsy to make coffee in my room just for the sake of being able to use it.

What's the view from your window?
I'll be happy to show you. The weather was delicious today, overcast and foggy, perfect for pictures.

Where's your favorite place?
Depends on my mood, really. I could always go for some studying at a coffee shop though.

What are your favorite books?
There's so many! I most recently read The Blood of Flowers by Anita Amirrezvani and I fell in love with it. It was one of the most intricate and beautiful stories I've ever read, and tends to get a little out there. It reminded me a lot like Memoirs of a Geisha, another favorite of mine. I tend to be drawn in to stories set in completely different cultures; it's a fun way to learn, I think. I'm also a lover of classics, particularly A Tale of Two Cities and The Picture of Dorian Gray. Basically, I'll read anything and everything. I love to read, and do it often. That and Harry Potter, I'm a HP nerd like you wouldn't believe.

Also: Jonathon Livingston Seagull, The Bell Jar, Catcher in the Rye, Norwegian Wood, Pride & Prejudice, Cyrano de Bergerac...

Favorite movies?
Casablanca, It Happened One Night, Pride & Prejudice, Elizabethtown, Almost Famous, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Roman Holiday- this list could go on for quite some time.

You have a day with no plans, what do you do?
I read, study (to be honest, I thoroughly enjoy studying and love a good textbook. I read them for fun, even). That and I would get some friends together, go for a drive, and have a photo day.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A cartoonist.

Do you have any phobias?
Diving boards. They give me the willies.

Name three countries you would like to visit.
Italy, New Zealand, Japan

If you HAD to change your name, what would it be to?
Something different, like Gretchen or Delilah.

If you could go on a road trip with anyone (dead or alive) who would it be?
JK Rowling, hands down. We'd have a blast.

What is your favorite time of day?
I love the magic hour, and when I'm lucky enough to have my camera at such a blessed time of day. I also love late nights, that's when I feel the most inspired, I believe.

What do you do when you're feeling sad?
Read and watch a good cheesy movie. With chocolate strawberries, my ultimate comfort food.

Which is one television character you love?
Helga Pataki. She's so feisty, I love it.

What do you value most in a person?
Compassion, I find such a trait the easiest to spot as well. It has this wonderful capability of radiating from a person, and it's easy to be drawn to such an amicable quality.

Were you considered popular in high school?
Not really. I wasn't hated or anything, but in a class of 961 (give or take) I didn't particularly stand out.

What do you sing in the shower?
Leaving on a Jet Plane, every time.

If you were a crayon, what crayon would you be?
I'd go with a forest green

What book are you reading now?
The Historian. I like it already and it has so much to teach.

Elizabeth: Take Two

After my recent blog massacre I eventually decided to re-upload past sets in new blog posts. Tedious? Yes. Annoying? Ultimate yes. However, I can't say it's been a total disaster going through my old ION (a gargantuan external drive the size of my forearm) considering I had a nice time going through old memories. The nostalgia was unavoidable.

So here is my old Elizabeth set! She's insanely crafty and a wonderful artist, and I had a lot of fun with these.

My apologies to anyone whose seen all of these before as I re-upload past sets. My bad completely.

Side note: As you may have noticed (if you're one of the very few visitors here, ha) I'm changing up my blog's look. My knowledge of any sort of web design is rather exiguous, but I'm learning. Gradually, yes, but still.
